Here in the states we call our sport track and field, but other parts of the English-speaking world refer to it as "athletics." In our sport there is a wide variety of events that require speed, power, endurance, and coordination. Athletes sprint and run and jump and throw things.
Below are some of the infographics published by a British newspaper during the Olympics in 2012 and 2016, hence the use of metric measurements. While US colleges compete using international and Olympic standards, the details of some of the events are different for American high school athletes. For instance, instead of the 400m hurdles in Michigan we run the 300m intermediate hurdles and use eight flights set at the same distances. Our 100m/110m hurdles are set one click lower than the international standard. High school boys' throwing implements are lighter (1.6k discus, 12-pound shot), but high school girls' throwing implements are the same size and weight as those used in the Olympics.
